Families who foster

Foster families do a very important job by looking after children. However, it is a big decision that we, at Care Visions, encourage the whole family to thoroughly discuss. The sons and daughters of foster carers often worry about what fostering will mean for them. They have questions like:

  • Will I have to share my toys, my music, my bedroom, and my possessions?

  • What will it be like sharing my parents?

  • Will it change my family and what will those changes be like?

  • What if I don’t get on with the foster child?

  • Will my parents act differently towards me?

The assessment process that you will all go through will answer these types of questions (as answers will depend on each individual situation) and is designed to be thorough. It present opportunities to discuss any concerns to make sure that it is a family decision that will work for all. Once foster children come to live with you, your family will have a social worker and they will work through any other questions and issues as they arise.

The child coming to live with your family will have their own social worker too. The social worker will visit your family regularly and get to know you so that if there are any problems they can support your family with them. There will be meetings, called ‘reviews’, at least once a year. We will sit down together with your family and think about how things are going and whether any of you need support with anything. We will want to hear your views too.
