Fostering - you can make a difference

Shortage of Foster Carers: The Fostering Network estimates that there is an urgent need for over 10,000 additional foster carers in the UK. This shortage means that children are too often being moved from home to home, are split up from their brothers and sisters, changing schools and have to live a long way from their family and friends.  The lack of continuity doesn’t give them a chance to experience the stability and support they need. The shortage of foster carers puts pressure on the whole service especially on the children and young people.

You can make a difference: By becoming a foster carer you can help reduce the worrying statistics that the shortage of foster carers causes and the resulting instability it creates.

Help us improve these statistics: The Young Peoples Project reported that without consistent and stable foster care:

  • 75% of children in could leave school with no qualifications.

  • 60% of young people leaving care are not in education, employment or training and with the loss of contact with family (and extended family such as cousins, aunties and uncles) their support mechanism and sense of belonging that most young people have is not available to them.

  • Foster children are much more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol.
