Fostering offers children and young people a home while their own family is unable to look after them so to meet this need we look for:
A wide variety of people to apply: Whether you are single, married, in a partnership, already have children, rent or own your own home - we don’t mind. We need a variety of foster carers who have a diverse range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds so that we can place children in an environment as similar to their own as possible.
Desirable skills: You don't need any formal qualifications. What you do need are skills that will enable you to meet the needs of the children you care for such as being a great listener, having a good sense of humour, optimism and generally having your feet firmly on the ground. You must be over 21 years old and able to offer; time, commitment and space to accommodate the children that will be placed in your care.
Still on the fence about applying?
Visit our ‘Make a difference’ section to read more about why fostering is so important. Our ‘Types of fostering’ may also be of interest as certain kinds of fostering may be more suitable to your lifestyle than others.
Our ‘The role of a foster carer’ and 'Pay and support' sections provide more detail on what is expected of a foster carer role and the rewards (job satisfaction as well as financial – yes you do get a professional fee and allowances to cover all costs).
The ‘Assessment process’ is designed to ensure this career is for you but we will support you all the way through the process and beyond.
See our ‘Frequently asked questions’ for a summary of what we get asked regularly.
